Our Story
Mentoring CHEC
The seeds of “Mentoring CHEC” took root when a Washington Post reader championed a standout CHEC student who had beaten the odds and was heading to Princeton on a full scholarship. MCIP would never be the same.
The Washington Post reader was Sheryl Frank and the student was Edwin Ordoñez. Sheryl supported Edwin throughout his time at Princeton where he flourished and graduated with honors. Inspired by Edwin’s success, Sheryl realized that many other deserving students faced similar barriers in achieving their college dreams. Determined to level the playing field, she envisioned a program that would provide personalized mentorship and comprehensive college preparatory support. Driven by this vision, Mentoring CHEC was established to empower students like Edwin, helping them navigate system barriers and increase their chances of success.
COLLABORATIVE EFFORT
The realization of Sheryl’s vision was bolstered by key partners. Learn24 played a crucial role, providing MCIP with a capacity-building grant that funded the development of promotional materials, a dedicated website, and an exploration of the program’s viability. This foundational support was instrumental in laying the groundwork for what would become a transformative initiative. The DC Rotary Foundation also offered strategic support, supplying a cadre of mentors that added momentum and depth during the program’s nascent stages. Their involvement brought a wealth of experience and dedication, enhancing the program’s impact.
A CHAMPION EMERGES
The most crucial and sustained supporter of “Mentoring CHEC” has been, and continues to be, the Schusterman Foundation. Inspired by CHEC’s high college acceptance rate (86%), the Schusterman Foundation recognized an opportunity to elevate this success further. They understood that moving from high college attendance to higher college persistence and matriculation rates required ensuring that seniors graduated with sufficient financial aid to overcome the systemic barriers often faced by first-generation college students. The Foundation was particularly intrigued by the correlation between CHEC students’ success in graduating from college and their entry into selective, resource-rich institutions. These colleges are generally better equipped to accommodate and support the unique challenges of under-resourced first generation college students.
With resolve, our mission is to prepare these talented individuals for entry into great colleges with robust financial aid, ensuring they have the opportunities they deserve.
Students
- At CHEC, the students embody diversity, resilience, and the spirit of global unity. As part of a citywide magnet program and the second largest school in DC Public Schools, CHEC attracts students from all wards across the District. This vibrant community represents over 65 countries and speaks more than 30 languages, making CHEC the "United Nations" of DC Public Schools.
- The student body is a rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds, with 63% identifying as Latino, 31% as African or African-American, 4% as Asian, and 2% from other backgrounds. This multicultural environment fosters a unique educational experience where students learn from one another, celebrate their differences, and grow together.
- CHEC students are not only academically driven but also passionate about making a difference in their communities. They bring a wealth of perspectives and talents to the table, excelling in academics, arts, sports, and community service. Their diverse backgrounds and experiences equip them to tackle global challenges and become leaders in an interconnected world.
- At Mentoring CHEC, we are dedicated to supporting these remarkable students. Working closely with CHEC administration, we identify students who would significantly benefit from having a mentor. Our focus is on high-potential students who need direction or guidance to realize their full potential. Through personalized mentorship and comprehensive college preparatory programs, we empower them to overcome barriers and achieve their dreams.
Being a Mentor
Our mentors are extraordinary individuals from all walks of life, united by a shared purpose to make a profound impact. They commit to a two-year journey, dedicating their time, energy, and expertise to guide and inspire our students.
Mentors come from diverse fields such as education, business, healthcare, law, and the arts, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience. Whether you are a seasoned professional or someone passionate about helping others, you can make a difference. If you care about making a positive impact, you have what it takes to be a mentor.
We provide comprehensive training and ongoing support to ensure you have the tools and resources needed to succeed. Our mentors are driven by a passion for education and a commitment to social justice, understanding the challenges our students face and determined to help them overcome obstacles.
The success of our mentors lies in their ability to build strong, trusting relationships with their mentees. They provide not just academic guidance but also emotional and moral support, fostering confidence and resilience. Through empathy, patience, and genuine interest in their mentees’ growth, they create a safe and supportive environment for students to explore their potential.
The Power of Inspiration and Culturally Appropriate Role Models
At Mentoring CHEC, we believe in the power of inspiration. Our mentors serve as role models who inspire students to dream big and reach their full potential. By sharing their own experiences and successes, mentors ignite a sense of possibility and ambition in their mentees.
We recognize the importance of culturally appropriate role models, especially for students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and others from underrepresented backgrounds. Seeing mentors who reflect their own identities and experiences can be incredibly empowering for students. These mentors can provide unique insights and guidance that resonate deeply with their mentees, helping them navigate challenges related to their cultural or personal identities.
We aim to build a universe of willing participants as diverse as the students we serve. Our mentors include individuals from various racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, as well as those who identify as LGBTQ+. This diversity enriches our mentoring program and ensures that all students can find mentors who understand their unique experiences and perspectives.
